5 Steps To Take To Really Pest-Proof Your Home

pestsAlthough around 95% of insects are classified as harmless or even beneficial to humans, that doesn’t necessarily mean that we want them in our homes. Invasions of ants looking for a tasty snack to take back to their colony or a handful of flies buzzing round your head when you’re trying to enjoy a cold beer might not be harmful, but let’s face it, they’re pretty annoying right! With this in mind, here are 5 steps you can take to really pest-proof your home.

Fitting insect screens

Whether you install screen meshing yourself or leave it to the professionals insect screens do a great job in keeping the little critters out. Opt for 20 mesh or finer and you should keep everything at bay apart from the odd aphid.

Install door sweeps

Even the tiniest gap between your door and the floor is big enough for a number of insects. This being the case you might want to install door sweeps at the base of entry and exit doors into your home. Garage doors can easily be fitted with a rubber seal, and for glass sliding doors, a foam weather stripping along the bottom track should do the trick.

Aside from being aesthetically unsightly, cracks are a great place for geckos or spiders to lurk. A good quality silicone should do the trick for smaller cracks. For larger openings then cement or mortar is the preferred material of choice.

Wire meshing for natural vents

For natural vents such as extractor fans, boilers and chimneys you might want to install smaller wire mesh. Doing so prevents anything from birds, rodents, and even cats from nesting in your space.

Tidy, tidy, tidy

Finally a general tidy up of your outside space should prevent too many less-than-desirable insects from making their home here. So remove any unwanted plant pots (great hiding place for scorpions and spiders), keep shrubs and tree limbs away from touching the house by pruning them back (they make ideal entry points for an insect or rodent), and remove any leaves and grass clippings from around your foundation.
